Tilawat is a beautiful district of the city and also known as a heritage village. It was a prominent commercial center in the 19th century.

Tilawat was the heart of the famous textile industry of the region. Its main streets, with its exquisite buildings like temples, churches, edifices and monuments, show how rich it was. This old town is quite famous because of its remarkable architecture and still has some very prominent structures. These architectural structures include the Agartala Birla Temple and the Chittorgarh Fort.

The most famous textile mills of the area were situated here. Tilawat produced the best carpets, and various other types of fabrics. Apart from that, it also produced the finest colored silk.

Today, the textile industry of the region has a completely different shape. Though there are still several textile mills and a few carpet factories, it has mostly gone to some large-scale garment and textile manufacturing.

Tilawat is a very historic district, as its main streets are famous for the beautiful temples and palaces that exist in this district. Many of the rich people who were influenced by the Thaliyas or the flourishing Bazar has built the edifices. There are numerous churches and monuments that could be seen here.

The cultural activity in this historic district is mostly inspired by a mixture of the different artistic cultures of the country. The people of the district have a very strong religious beliefs, and hence, they try to create some wonderful landmarks and old relics in order to build up their identity.

Tilawat is located on the banks of the Changram, the largest river in the state. The river is home to many beautiful and relaxing lagoons and a lot of the industries in the district.

Another area that you will want to visit is the Mandara open air market. This market is a heritage town and had a lot of historical importance, because it was where the king used to sell his wares. You can walk through the markets and you can even buy a few crafts here.
